Devlog update: Fog of War

Devlog Update: Line of Sight and Fog of War Decisions

During development, we explored a number of Fog of War systems, aiming to balance strategic clarity with performance. Early experiments included full-map fog overlays and terrain-based visibility masks. While visually effective, these systems introduced complexity and performance overhead—especially on larger battlefields.

After extensive testing, we’ve decided to move away from traditional Fog of War altogether. Instead, we’re focusing on a clean and tactical Line of Sight (LoS) system. Enemy units will only be visible if they fall within the active field of view of a player-controlled unit. Once out of sight, those enemies will disappear from the battlefield view entirely until spotted again.

This approach keeps visuals clean, maintains suspense, and emphasizes smart positioning. Each unit has a 180-degree horizontal and vertical field of vision, making flanking and elevation more impactful in combat. It also simplifies map readability and keeps player attention where it matters most: on movement, tactics, and survival.

We're confident this direction better suits the core gameplay of Evervalley – Blood and Bone and reinforces the tactical decisions at the heart of every encounter.
